Lightning ‘could one day be harvested as energy’

September 2nd, 2010 in In the News

[CURITIBA] Brazilian researchers say they have come a step closer to harnessing the power of ambient electricity that causes lightning and has the potential to become a source of clean energy. Early research has indicated it may be possible to develop devices that can capture ambient electricity, much as solar panels capture sunlight, while also preventing lightning before it can discharge, researchers said.

Banks Grow Wary of Environmental Risks

September 2nd, 2010 in In the News

After years of legal entanglements arising from environmental messes and increased scrutiny of banks that finance the dirtiest industries, several large commercial lenders are taking a stand on industry practices that they regard as risky to their reputations and bottom lines. In the most recent example, the banking giant Wells Fargo noted last month what it called “considerable attention and controversy” surrounding mountaintop removal mining, and said that its involvement with companies engaged in it was “limited and declining.”

NOAA Reopens More than 4,000 Square Miles of Closed Gulf Fishing Area

September 1st, 2010 in In the News

Today NOAA reopened 4,281 square miles of Gulf waters off western Louisiana to commercial and recreational fishing. The reopening was announced after consultation with FDA and under a re-opening protocol agreed to by NOAA, the FDA, and the Gulf states. On July 18, NOAA data showed no oil in the area. Light sheen was observed on July 29, but none since. Trajectory models show the area is at a low risk for future exposure to oil, and fish caught in the area and tested by NOAA experts have shown no signs of contamination.

How Does Your Organization Calculate its Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions?

August 18th, 2010 in Featured, Perspectives

The Obama administration identifies tracking greenhouse gas emissions as an important mandate, with the objective of protecting our environmental future by taking action to reduce our carbon footprint.  In April 2010, Noblis successfully completed a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for calendar year 2008 according to the rigorous standards of The Climate Registry (TCR). Through [...]

Unlike Mitigation, Climate Adaptation Could Be Pursued Through Existing Authorities

August 4th, 2010 in Featured, Perspectives

Noblis caught up with Josh Foster, an adaptation expert with the Center for Clean Air Policy, at the White House Climate Adaptation Summit May 25-27 co-sponsored by Noblis.  Foster made a strong case for pursuing climate adaptation efforts through existing statutory powers.  While climate mitigation efforts would hinge on establishing new legislative powers, existing authorities [...]
